A3 Start Problems
I have recently been experiencing an intermittent problem when starting my 2004 Audi A3 2.0 FSI. It sometimes attempts to turn over but seems to struggle before turning over. Once it turns over the dashboard takes a while to display. When it does light up, the dashboard shows a couple of warning lights which i have attached a picture of. The clock also always resets, as if the battery has been removed and re-connected. I have checked the battery leads and they all seem fine, and clean from debris.
Anyone got any thoughts?

OOPS! I didn't realize that you are across the pond. Several of the chain and/or franchised retail automotive parts stores here in the colonies offer free battery tests. At any rate, seven (7) years is a long time for an automotive battery to last. When one lasts me 4.5 years, I replace it as a matter of preventive maintenance.

Well having had the battery checked there were a few problems identified. It would appear when the hand unit during the check was connected to the battery with leads attached and the engine switched off, the read out mentioned the battery was still under load. E.g. Engine on / Radio On etc... However this wasn't the case.
Only when the battery lead was removed from the battery and the check was performed did the hand unit provide a read out. The battery status has dropped to 23% and is un-serviceable. So for a starter a new battery is needed as putting it on charge won't raise it back to a useable state.
I had the alternator checked and that was fine. I'm going to get a diagnostic run on the engine to see where the load is coming from before swapping the battery as i don't won't the new one suffering the same fate...

Since you now know the battery will not hold a charge I suggest that you change it and see what happens before spending the money to have further tests run. I think it likely that replacing the 7 year old battery will solve the problem. Good luck.

I have indeed changed the battery, and the car now starts again like a dream. The other little niggles with electrics and the dashboard lights appear to have gone away as well so i am happy. Picked up a new bosch 5 year warranty battery from eurocarparts with a 25% discount at the moment.

similar issues..
When I start the car once in a while it will immediately turn off like a stalling in a manual (mine is automatic/dsg) I had the battery checked and it has good charge strength..Anyone know what's up?
