Power drop problem...
Glad to hear about air sensor - hope it is all ok. i think it is just unlucky that it broke - unlikely to be the filter??
Got a silver TT 180Q Roadster this morning - it rattles alot though

and guess what which part was to blame? Yes, the air-mass sensor, which was changed and everything was back to normal the same day. So, nothing to worry about (assumption).

Car evertually got picked up today at 12:30pm. Because "my" krytox had come in, I put a note in the car to remind the technician to re-krytox my door seals. Whether they did this or not, I have yet to find out, but whatever they have done, the door seal creak is now worse than it was when it left me at 12:30 this afternoon. I..just..don't..****ing..believe..it!!!!!!! I am so so sick of taking my car back to have the same problem fixed over and over again. It depresses me, it really does. It gets me wondering sometimes if this car is really worth the money, sometimes I want to get shut of it, I really do. ****in thing is driving me mad!
Whinge over with...
Anyway, they replaced the cars MAF sensor, and throttle response and power seems to be back to normal now. I'm going to run with the paper filter for a month, and see if any other engine problems appear. I then might go back to the K&N, to see if the original problem comes back. On the whole I'll probably ditch the K&N.

My experience suggests that a slap dash approach = squeaky, time and effort = good response - can you not get them to give you the stuff and do it yourself.
P.S. I have 2 rattles in my dash right now which are pissing me off! Don't feel alone out there!

I sent an e-mail to K&N asking their opinion on what the dealer technician said.
Here is my original e-mail:

Hi,
I have been using a K&N Panel filter in my 1999 Audi A3 1.8T Sport, with no problems for what must be nearly 10000 miles.
However, at the weekend the engine developed what seemed (to the RAC technician) to be a misfire. It was loosing power, and spluttering on full and part throttle.
I took the car to my Audi dealer, who said that the K&N filter is the cause of the problem. Oil from the filter (I have not oiled the filter since purchasing it) had deposited itself on the air-mass sensor, which was thus giving the engine obscure readings. They cleaned the sensor, and suggested I return to the old paper filter.
The car seems to be fine at the moment with the old paper filter, i.e. it doesn't loose power like before.
Have you had other customers with this type of problem?
Is my dealer talking rubbish?
Do you have any recommendations?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Alan Barker.

----- K&N's response -----
Firstly sorry to hear you have been experiencing problems with your car.
I do feel, however, that your dealer has mislead you slightly. If the K&N filter had indeed been over oiled which occasionally does happen, the excess oil atomises and passes through the engine with out affecting any systems. This would happen within the first hundred miles or so, after this the oil within the filter does not come out, it remains impregnated on the cotton gauze element until you service the filter with the K&N cleaning solution.
In your case where the filter has been running for 10,000 miles with no problem the filter will be well bedded in and not releasing any residue. I have checked with my colleagues and we are not aware of any previous instances where oil from the filter has damaged or impaired the performance of an injection system.
I do not see any reason why the K&N filter should not be re-installed in to your vehicle, if you have any further problems please do not hesitate to contact me.
Many Thanks

I suppose that was going to be their response, but I thought I'd post it anyway.
Cheers,
AL
Hope everything works out for you in the final episode (whenever that may come). Keep the faith.
