You would definitely know if it was the timing belt. Your whole engine would seize up and you wouldn't be able to start it ever again. I know first hand. If that's the case, thousands to fix. New engine will be needed.

What you need to do is first figure out what you're actually dealing with. Such as which engine is this? Type 8T had nearly a dozen different engines available over its time.

Presuming this is the 2.0T, pull the inspection cover on the lower timing cover and see if the tensioner is actually fully extended.
Manually spin it to cyl 1 TDC (verified with a dowel or such in the cyl 1 spark plug hole; do not trust the vibration damper mark) and pull the upper timing cover and verify the measurements to the cam marks.

If it is an older car with a lot of miles, it is time for a new vehicle. Installing a new engine is tricky. If the car has a lot of miles, you probably are faced with replacing other components. Cars in Michigan suffer from rust.

Default While pulling engine

Since the motor I have is a 2.0TFSI & it’s a manual 6speed does anyone know if I have to remove the whole front bumper?? Or could I just pull out through the top?? My last C5 Audi I rebuilt the transmission and it was a pain in the *** like no other having to pull the subframe and then split the motor on the ground was total bull****. I’m gonna take out the motor and tear down to see what needs replacing or maybe I might do a rebuild or just order a REMAN job if possible. Either way the motor has to come out . So might as well start tearing it down and have a look to see what extent I need to repair or just find a Junkyard motor ( which I already looked ). There are quite a few out there . Mine had 117k. I found outhers with only 50 to 60K but they not cheap. Anywhere from 2900 to 4600.

Borescope it and see what's up inside. For it to smash the plug though? Even broken chain won't do that. The piston shouldn't be able to physically reach the plug, no?

A4 and A5 are going to be similar in this regard. You might watch through these and see what you think of the process.

part 1, youtu.be/_bHrldGxdAM
part 2, youtu.be/33Oox0bcFH8
part 3, youtu.be/HdmUf-3Mf5g

It's not like the Audi V6 approach where you drop the engine/trans assembly and then split it. Trans can stay in the car, but you need a jack to keep it up. You see he leaves the bumper in place, but I don't know why one wouldn't at least use service position to create some more clearance.
