Can anyone help me? I do have personalized plates on my S5 and is time to renew my registration, however, I do want to go back to my old plates ( and save a few bucks ) which are by the way part of the registration anyways. Can I just install the old ones myself? Should I return personalized ones to DMV?
IIRC, NY State law regarding plates is they are suppose to be returned to the DMV when they are not in use. Meaning, you were not suppose to keep your old plates to begin with. And once you car is registered with a new plate (Your current personalized plates), you will have to re-start over again as in apply for regular plates and return your personalized plates to the DMV.

How should I approach this??
Thank you guys ( and girls )
I may be wrong but in the past it was the case in NYS that you needed to turn the old plates in at DMV and get a paper receipt. You then had to give/mail the receipt to your insurance carrier before they drop the coverage and premiums on the old car. Since you're keeping the same car maybe this totally non-applicable and I am sorry for the rant :-)
In any event, I'd ask your insurance agent - they would know for sure and are probably easier to reach than the DMV.
My registration sticker shows both, my old plate + the personalized plate, so I am guessing I am running on both? and does this only mean that I came from XXX-0000 into a personalized plate?
I just want to return to my old plate and avoid paying personalized one.
