Default 6MT problems...

Maybe its just bad luck on my part, but how many 6MT owners run across valets that have trouble with the clutch? I've already had one valet toast mine - resulting in an insurance claim and eventually an RS4 replacement. I just got my car back from a valet and the smell was horrid and definitely coming from my car (no smoke pouring from the wheel wells this time). WTF? Is the 6MT allroad *that* hard to drive?

Luckily, this time it still drives fine and doesn't feel like the flywheel is warped. Anyone else having issues like this? After driving 5 miles home, I can still smell it! The whole point of the AR for me is to have something fun with utility that I can use everyday. Slushboxes, in pretty much any form, are just no fun. May as well drive a lexus.

Default <raises hand>

I dont know what the problem is. are parents not teaching their kids to drive a stick? are valet companies not asking if people can drive one before hiring these folks. I actually was thankful one evening for a kid that hopped in realized he couldnt drive it and hopped back out calling someone else over rather than just trying it.

Most parents don't have a manual trans car to begin with, so teaching it is almost a lost art.

Valet parking whats that???

Last time I did that ... well .... Good noone called the cops... I wanted to kill him ... My Poor GLI smelled like tires and clutch... my wife was screaming at me and the valet at the same time .. people around were taking cover...
funny I tell you!!!

Don't do valet... Most of them just beat on the cars ....

If a valet toasts my clutch ... he better run... I don't care if hi is Mike T. I will take him down

Default Used to valet...

Of course I had no problem with it since the first car I ever had to drive was a manual as we had nothing else, but it was tought getting staff for our service and a few nights of big events I was training people in the parking lot and that was 18 years ago when manuals were more popular. We always could shuffle folks when a stick arrived and put someone who could drive it in the car, but fetching cars was another story as you rarely knew what you were getting.

Also clutches vary and sometimes they can be tough to get just right when your running around. While I have never burned one up I have stalled a few cars in my time - mainly 911s or exotics. BMWs also had tricky clutches back then. The worst was the reverse tricks -- Saabs were tough the first time to figure out if you never drove one.

We also had one idiot that would take a car or two for a "ride". Always took a stick if he did. He did not last long....long story there that ironically involved an Audi. He was a real waste that kid...who knows what ever happened to him.

Default I always ask.."can you drive a stick?" one time the valet did say yes...

and I watched him ty to move i in 3rd from a start.

I very quickly got him out of the ar and parked it myself....I held out my hand..but he didn't tip me.

Default once upon a time I had abig block ford-

the valet "popped" the clutch, took the car sideways across traffic and head on into oncomming traffic. All while we were still on the sidewalk.

The restaurant's Insurance paid better than "fair market" for the car. It was never replaced- it became the down payment on our home. then kids came, and there is always something that the "loose change" can go towards

Default Have you seen the new Jetta commercial? The guy won't give up his keys to the valet:) more,,,

I drove Gragravar's ar <before it became the beast of its present self> and I have driven manuals, but not for awhile...I would say that the clutch on the ar in general is probably much more "touchy" than the Honda's I have driven in the past...very forgiving and most likely the type of clutch that the age of your average valet would have available to them...so to give the devil his due just a little it might be "not your average drive"...on the other hand they could do like I did with Grag's car and not get it out of third gear...for most valet situations I would think second would be fine...I think it is horrible if a valet treats a car poorly and I would not go to that place again if happened to me and quite frankly I don't think I'd let a valet park mine even though it's a TIP just because I don't want it all scratched up. That coming from someone who rarely frequents places with valet service <that's not available at Burger King you say?>
