Re: Look more deeply into the allroad and you'll be surprised
PJD : I know what you mean, but I don't really think that audi is going to gain much of the SUV market with the Allroad.
We are talking about a $35,000 to $45,000 market (X5 3.0 , ML320, RX-300) and All road is about $50,000 !
All road is a great product, but I think that it's more an Audi fast market reaction than a planned SUV.
Thxs.

Allroad competes more with ML430, X5 4.4, MDX
I still managed to claim it was cheap when I nearly had to replace mine...
For an audi group SUV thats a real SUV, look for the Porsche/VW Cayenne/Colarado, but thats even more hideously expensive.

Re: Why Would Audi Sell An SUV??
The Allroad is superior to most SUV's, Audi beat all of the other brands by coming to market with such an unusual vehicle - an SUV with the heart of a sports car. I wouldn't count on an SUV from Audi anytime soon.

The allroad is south of $45K, the others you mentioned aren't.....
by the time you upgrade the performance.
You have to compare the allroad to the souped up X5 and the AMG ML. The allroad beats the stock versions of the ones you mentioned in engine performance, ground clearance, interior room, braking performance, dry and wet weather handling, and cargo room. Other than those insignificant factors, the others can make a compelling argument <g>.
And almost all of us that own allroads paid less than $45K.

I have to agree with seaotter01 on one point
I don't think either that Audi will make much of a penetration into the SUV market. 90% of the people whom I tell 'I drive a wagon' (I hope we agree that the ar is shaped like a wagon) cringe and make comments like 'Why not an SUV or Minivan (I cringe at their suggestion)...or a sedan'. They picture
1) the 1970s wagons that smelt bad and was big like a boat.
2) economy wagons like the Saturn, Ford Focus etc.
It's not until they see / ride in the ar do they change their opinions. Americans in general have a wagon phobia (another reason the 5 series wagons don't sell as well either). They see SUVs (IMO) as being more sexy than wagons....and minivans as more desirable than wagons.
I personally suffer from SUV/Minavan phobia.

Don't claim to know Audi marketing, but would suppose
that they missed the SUV craze and didn't want to release a "me too" product. Instead they came out with something a bit different. Whether it works I think is more a function of how well they are able to define a new market segment. But they definitely have the vehicle to back it up. IMHO it is absolutely superior to the vehicles you mention, and comparably priced if you option them similarly.
And as a bonus you can shock the hell out of many a sedan/sports car owner that would never in their worst nightmares be beaten by a "wagon"
