For the Braintrust: Strange smell coming from vents.

When mine was smelling due to cam seals leaking it almost just smelled "hot" when I
got out of the car especially. Didn't do it every time either...it may very well depend upon where the leak is located and what it falls on...on mine I never experienced any oil on the pavement, i.e. it was all burning off by the time it would have hit the ground...good luck.

It's a musty smell that comes when the evaporator warms up. Here's how I eliminated that smell.
At least it's worth a try..
When you accelerate the a/c compressor is cut off to generate more power. The evap warms up and you get that smell.
To eliminate the smell for me. I turn on the heater,set the temp to max and turn on all the vents. Floor, mid and defrost all at the same time and go for a drive with the windows down because of the heat generated. Run for at least 10-15 mins then hit auto and set temps to norm. See if that improves the smell.
