Default Car dead

Driving back from lunch today car stalled and won't re-fire. Car cranks just fine. No check engine light. All systems nominal. No Joy.

The gear indicator PRNDS is illuminated so I assume that means ECU issue. Got to the shop and they couldn't get ECU comm with VAGCOM but were able to acess the APR chip directly... What do you think?

Default I assuming that you have the soldered in APR chip? If so when you first turn the key on, did you see

the check engine light come on from a breif period of time?

It sounds like a bad ECMS module or bad solder joint to me.

Default I would second the cold soldering point given the symptoms....

If you are electronically inclined then it's an easy DIY to go over the soldering points again, wont hurt to check.

Default soldered in... yes check engine for a moment (with other lights)...

Well it's getting checked... you would think after 60K (90k on car) it wouldn't be a problem but who knows. if were soldering I'm thinking of soldering in the old (stock) chip and flashing code. I'm starting to get the AR blues...

Fixed trans 3500
ABout to do TB 1200
Need brake maint 1500 (include new rear setup and fresh front rotors)
Need 4 new tires 900
NOw this problem $$$$

list is growing - cash is not.

allroad ownership - priceless

Default Been there done that...

new ecu or re-solder the chip.....should just need a re-solder - APR is good on warranty. Free fix.

Carlsen Audi in July - They were persuaded to match an indy shop on price.

They R&R'd the torque converter, a complete trans service and did some front axle swaps.

Default Had similar problem on my S4. Replaced the GIAC ECU back to stock. No problems again.

I would drive all the way to work with no problems. Then on the way to lunch or something it would stall at speed. I'd coast to a stop. It would usually recrank but would stall soon after trying to get it to move. Had it towed twice.
Put in the stock ECU, and all was fine. I opened up the GIAC unit and could not see any problems like corrosion or a bad solder, but have never tried to fix it. Though I sold the S4, I still have that ECU. Gonna try to get it repaired one of these days, to sell it or give to someone. It's an A model stage I ECU. My S4 was 7/99 early model.
