Default Check engine warning light

Anyone out there experience a check engine light which stays on even though everything appears normal? My allroad has 9200 miles and has been perfect up until now. Dealer says it is probably the instrument cluster which needs to be replaced, but they cannot even look at it until the middle of August! Dealer service has been poor in my area (Portland Oregon). Great sales team, but it took me weeks to get in for my first service and now that I have a problem, I have a 5 week wait. I have owned 8 bmw's including a 540i 6-speed and I feel the allroad is a better driving road car than the BMWs. I can honestly say though, that unless the service department issue gets resolved, this will be the last Audi I own. Sorry to show my frustration, but can anyone out there shed light on the "check engine" light problem? Thanks!

Default Re: Check engine warning light

My check engine warning light came on on a Friday, and as I had my 10k service scheduled already for the next Monday, they said it could wait. They said it was probably that I had not turned the gas cap until it clicked (I had--I am always careful to do that). Then I was told that it was probably that I had run the gas tank too empty. I admitted AFTER they told me this that I had "pretty much emptied it" (ran it down probably 5 or 10 miles past 0 to go on the computer after hearing on this forum that others had done it). When they got it in, however, their computer showed "evaporative leak". They tested it for most of a day but couldn't find it, so they apologized and said that they thought it must have been one of the previous two answers, but I should keep an eye on it.

I have also been frustrated with my service department, but not because of the delay in service, luckily.

Default Anything from a loose gas cap

to a faulty Mass Air Flow sensor might trigger the check engine light but not affect the operation of the vehicle. The OBD II system has lots of 'unnecessary' safeguards built in for emmissions purposes.

Default Check Engine Light problem - with a resolution...

I had my check engine light come on back in end of June. Immedietly I checked the fuel cap - and it was tight (I had just filled up that morning). Went to my dealer (University in Seattle) the next morning and they first asked about fuel cap. Then called up the Service guy to run a computer check. They did this all while I was waiting - early on a Monday morning. The computer showed a fault in the brake light sensor that triggers the cancel of cruise control. Replaced the sensor and have not had a problem with check engine light since. Of course when I get in the car later today I am sure that it will go off...!

One difference with my problem: The light came on twice - but then never again. When I got to dealer the light was off. However, the fault was still recorded in the computer.

This happened at about 1000 miles. I now have almost 2000 miles.

Thanks everyone! The cruise control explaination seams to fit my fact pattern best, since I was on a long trip with the cruise control engaged when the light first came on. If and when I get it to the dealer, I will post a follow-up.

Default Try this CRAZY idea!

Have not had ANY probs with my 2K1 allroad - albeit I only have 2K mi on it... However, I did experience a few idiosyncrasies on my '99 A6 (various lights coming on, etc. when all else seemed normal).... Being the impatient person I am, I thought "Hey, VW basically built this car, I'll stop by my local VW dealer!" So I did. They hooked the car up to their "reader" said it was nothing, reset the light (AND did NOT charge me)!I then returned to my fantasy world where everything goes my way!...

So in the future, when you just "can't wait" for the Audi dealer, try a respected/authorized VW service provider (not necessarily a dealer) for assistance! I did this several times with my A6. It especially behooved me since the nearest Audi dealer is 45mi from my home.... 8-)
