I've got x-pel
It's not 100% invisible. Where it covers the hood, you'll see a slight orange peel effect even though the mfgr claims otherwise. Likewise, you can see the line demarcating x-pel from paint at certain angles. Seen straight on from a few feet away it's invisible for the most part. I think it's worth it if you are worried about rock chips. I like to go to Lake Tahoe and the drive up and back has a lot of little rocks kicked up by the vehicles in front of me, so while not 100% immune, the x-pel gives me an added sense of peace regarding my paint job.

No, I had it professionally installed
I know some have done it themselves, but the installer has done it a lot more than I have and if there are installation issues like bubbles, etc., then I can point to him instead of myself.

I have it on my Allroad and TT
Most of the materials are manufactured by 3M, and sold as Stongard, ClearBra, x-pel, etc. I recommend you have it professionally installed, this is not a do it yourself project. Stongard makes a nice basic kit for the Allroad. You may want your installer to cut some custom pieces for the foglights and leading edge of the roof above the windshield.

I had door edges, handle cups and rearview covers
made with StonGard - pretty cool, I've had it for 2 years now and there's only a little bit of peeling, like less than 1mm around the grille. In addition of course of all the standard peices
