Default Die hard !!

I'm a die hard Audi fan and own a 3.0 Quattro A4 (manual). I have recently bought an AR 2.7 (tip) which I think is probably one of the most underrated cars around, certainly in South Africa where I stay. I have two questions:

(1) AR - If I program the suspension level to level 3 on automatic mode, my car automatically adjusts itself back to level 2 when I exceed +- 50 miles/hr and does not go back to level 3 even if I subsequently either stop or reduce the speed to below +- 50 miles/hr. Any explanations ?? (the AR manual is extremely thin on detail on this issue)

(2) From an outright performance perspective, would the AR be faster than the A4 3.0 Quattro (man)? My suspicion is that the A4 is much quicker off-the-mark (probably due to the turbo lag on the AR), but the question really is would the AR eventually catch up at higher speeds (I live in a high-altitude city)?

By the way, I think this is a helluva great forum !! Peace !

Default answer

A4 with 6spd 3.0 faster to 60 than stock AR with tip probably a nip faster if both have 6sp. Chip the AR and it will beat any stock A4.

The suspension should go back up to level three is you started ther. Mine does.

One thing: the 2.7T is notable for, among other things, very minimal turbo lag. The tiptronic tranny introduces the lag factor. All discussed here so search if you want. I think the A4 is probably far more "chuckable" and in 3.0 guise, faster than a stock AR.

Thanks a million for the answer myroad!. I will book the AR on Monday at my local dealer for a check up on the suspension adjustments.

Default Your suspension behaves like mine...

...with respect to level 3. (Mine does go automatically 2 -> 1 at about 80 mph and then 1 -> 2 when I stop. But it doesn't return to level 3 automatically.)

At altitude, the 2.7T is much stronger than the 3.0 (I live at 7200 feet). The allroad, however, is about 1000 lbs heavier than the A4, so this makes a difference with acceleration and, of course, handling.

Default Lag in brief

It is virtually impossible to have a turbo engine that has literally zero lag, but this 2.7T comes very very close to zero lag.

The 2.7T 6spd allroad is an incredible performer. I test drove, extensively, both transmission versions -- they are in certain respects totally different cars. The 2.7T tip is almost serene when driven back to back with the 6spd, which, although hardly raw is certainly at the minimum VERY spirited. Based on what I have read herein, chip the tip ar, perhaps chipping the non-tip could be considered "optional."

Default Mine returns to level 3 if that is where it begins...

but I think I remember hearing that is a particularity of the '03's.

fwiw, I really wanted to like the 6-sp A4 3.0 (financial reason) but the 6-sp allroad seemed much faster, especially once it's moving. The altitude is probably a big factor, too...5,500 to 6,500 here.

Default My experience is similar...

I have an '01 and it behaves in exactly the same way if I am at level 3 when the car starts. However, if I start at level 2 and raise it to level 3 on the fly, it will return to level 3 after dipping to a lower level because of the speed adjustment. However, it always returns to level 2 from level 1, unless I manually lower to level 1.
