Default Direction flasher relay.

Allroad 2.5 year 2000. Anyone know off hand which relay (number) is for the direction flasher and where it is situated in the vehicle. British model right hand drive.

Any help or info would be much appreciated.

Paul.

Its the hazard switch (which is also the combo relay) above the radio...pry off the wood cover carefully to access it, a pinch clip is on either side holding it in the dash. Use a plastic pry tool.

It's best to buy the considerably cheaper (in price) one from an A4...and then just switch the red triangle button from yours. They just pop on and off.

The VAG p/n is 1J0 953 235J ...you can have good results from a Chinese made one from ebay too I've heard.

Thanks Jimbo for that. Got the trim off ok but as hard as I tried I could not get even the thinest tool in beside the switch to press the side springs in. It seems the plastic flange of the switch fully conseals any access to the sides. Plus the close proxsimity of the level switches one side and the cup holder the other does not allow you to use brute force to lever the switch out.

It can be a bit hard to get them out....especially if it is your first time at it.

There is a lip on the bottom of the relay switch where you can get some leverage to release those clips and pry out the switch. I used the blade of a pocket knife once.

Use needle nose pliers. You will rip the switch up a bit, but if you're replacing it, it doesn't matter.

Thanks for your replies, Guys. Went out armed with long nose pliers (and a great big hammer) to have another go at it so thought I'd try it before I injured it and guess what, its now working normally again.

Who says the threat of violence doesn't work!!

Ha ! Funny stuff !

I was going to add that sometimes spraying electrical contact cleaner into the turn-signal stalk base on the column can make it work normal again for a bit.

Its best to change it out though because it will prolly get worse now that it has showed the symptoms of dying.

Unfortunately, it won't be fixed for long. The relay is failing, and they do go on Audis...
