Key remote range

My key remote locking has become irratic. Sometimes the range is normal and sometimes the range is about 1 foot. Any ideas? Is there an external aerial for the signal?
I have checked for fault codes - none.
I have deleted and re programmed all the key fobs to the car.
I have changed the batteries in key fobs.
All the key fobs function the same.
I have chekced the central locking control module in footwell, all looks normal and no wetness.

Sounds like the switch inside the driver's side door lock is malfunctioning... Does the open door chime cut off sometimes with the door still open?

Thats a very interesting answer. Actually there is a fault code but I dismissed it. "Driver door fails to deadlock". There may well be a fault with the drivers door lock.
How does the drivers door lock affect range of keyfob?
Don't know if you are in UK or USA but driver door is the right side for me.
What should I do next to diagnose?

If you hold the key fob under your chin against your skin you will almost double the range of your fob.

Now, I'm not sure for this model, but for most 03+ A4 models, the range of the FOB is limited on purpose (for some security issue). There was a mod for disabling the range limit.

Yes, there is an external antenna for the key fob; it's called a forehead.

you don't hold it to your forhead, you hold it under your chin with a "Things that make you go Hmmmm" move and the signal is amplified by your head.
