Default Leaky engine gaskets

I have a 2001 AR with 88K miles. The valve cover gaskets are leaking from both sides, so I figured it was time to replace them. However, I see on other posts that I should suspect many more gaskets/seals etc to go, so I might as we bite the bullet and replace them all.

Blauparts sells a kit which contains:
2 Front Cam Sprocket Camshaft Seals (Improved 'Viton' seal material)
2 Cam Reference Sensor Seals (Improved 'Viton' seal material)
2 Rear Camshaft End Cap Seals
2 Perimeter Neoprene Valve Cover Gaskets
2 Center Neoprene Valve Cover Gaskets
2 Improved Tensioner Cam Chain Gaskets
2 Improved Camshaft Valley Seals
New! Tube Silicone Gasket Compound
New! Step-by-Step Installation Instructions

My question is:
Has anyone done this before? Was it easy or difficult? What would be the unusual challenges of doing this? How long did it take? And: Does this kit cover all the usual suspects?

Next on the TODO list is the timing belt, and I see some of the seals are repeated in that kit. Perhaps it is better to do them both at the same time.

If it is time to do the timing belt, then I'd do both at once. The TB job is not for the faint hearted tho.........it requires a lot of work and a couple of special tools. However, if you have decent skills and a good tool box, no reason why you can't accomplish it.

You know if I where you I would do both at the same time because you usually have to take off the timing belt to do the seals I did the timing belt and replaced the leaking cam seals on my Allroad 01 to be honest with you if you have not done a timing belt on an Audi you should take it to someone it’s a huge job 7 hours to be exact you cant afford to make a mistake on the timing you can kill you engine and turbos. But don’t take it to the Audi dealership they will rip you off big time take it to a small euro only shop around you!

80skids, have you tried a timing belt job on one of these motors before? If so, what would make it difficult that would require that I go to a mechanic?

I understand that this is an interference engine, so timing needs to be done right, but then again, every time one works on a car, it needs to be done right. I have not done a TB job on an Audi, but as long as I am aware of the risks and the gotcha's, I should be able to do it. Blauparts rents the special tools, but I am wondering if there is something missing?

You know I thought about it when I was going to do it on my car and it freaked me out you know I guess if it was a Honda it might be ok but on a Audi its not I game I want to play because that engine is about 8 to 10,000 dollars for a new one if you time it wrong or miss something? You know anybody can learn to do anything they want if they take the time it’s just that unless you have loads of money to take those chances yeah you could take a chance but for me it freaks me out breaking my 40 thousand dollar car just to save a little bit of money but in answer to your question if you decide to do it do all the belts and cam seals water pump belt etc. because I just got my cam seals fixed a month ago and they had to take my timing belt off to do it best of luck let me know what you choose to do! I know some good people who tune my car I could ask them a good place in your state so you’re in good hands!

You need a special cam locking tool, and crank lock pin, as well as a puller to get the cam gears off. The cam gears MUST be loose when the belt is installed and tensioned. Failure to do this is certain doom, as it is IMPOSSIBLE to get the timing correct otherwise. At the TDIclub, we call this "Mark & Pray" when people do not use the correct tools.

The Allroad's t-belt job is a big job, resealing all the upper end gaskets compounds that considerably. This is NOT the job to learn how to work on your own car on.
