Default my ar's future

I guess I'm an old fart. I hate buying cars. When I do, I buy them in cash and drive them into the ground. Something unreasonable took hold of me when I bought the ar (o3) instead of another Land Cruiser (last LC had 400k on the od and still ran fine). But, now I really like this car and want to keep it running for sometime.

Given this car will be out of production shortly, would it be reasonable to assume that extended warranties may be difficult or impossible to get. Certainly sounds if repairs are expensive and parts slow to arrive.

Question is: Should I buy an extended warranty with only 22000 on an 03 to be certain I get a warranty that lasts me to 100k? I could get a 6-7 year 100k product from awb for about $1900.

Perhaps I should buy before they start realizing how expensive the ar is to repair--sounds like a few of you have really gotten use out of your warranties.

Your thoughts would be helpful.

Default The sooner you buy it, the cheaper it'll be...

...regardless of the allroad's future. I bought that level of extended warranty (through my dealer, so I could have repairs done there if I want), at about 35K miles, and it was something like $2300.

I'm now at 56K miles but haven't used it yet.

Default I think your concerns are justified....

I've been tracking the extended warranty market for the allroad since shortly after acquiring mine in July of '01. Things have changed drastically for our car since then. Some of the internet warranty providers started out offering allroad warranties, but have since retracted them (Warranty Direct, for example). And the 150,000 mile warranty that was available at one time from at least two companies...also history.

I already went with AWB, but don't have any claims yet to be able to tell you how good/bad they are. I guess if worse comes to worse, you can always wait and purchase the Audi flavor of extended warranty closer to the 50k mark (at a much higher cost). It's up to you whether you want to play 'wait and see'.

But I wouldn't recommend that anyone purchase a warranty from a company backed by a Risk Retention Group (RRG) rather than a real insurance company. You might as well take that money to Vegas instead, because you are definitely gambling on whether that company can pay your claims down the road. Just ask all the poor people trying to recover from the Warranty Gold bankruptcy. And be aware that dealerships also sell non-Audi backed warranties that are RRG's.

Default If you keep it, get an extended warranty.

Repairs to the turbos or suspension system could be very expensive. If we decide to keep our allroad, we'll deinitely buy an extended warranty. I'm leary of ANY third party warranties, right now I'm leaning toward the Audi extended even though it's a lot more expensive. Our other option when the lease is up at the end of this year is turn it in for an '04 4.2.
