Opinion of Allroad Quattro
purchase of a new Allroad quattro for my wife
as a family car (2 kids). I am a bit leary of
the dependability/reliability of the engine
(twin turbo/multivalves, etc) and the pneumatic
suspension. Is this a "finicky" car or can we
just get in and turn the key. Any opinions are
greatly appreciated. How about dealerships in the
downstate NY area? Any standouts?? Thanks.
- Windscreen wipers not aligned
- Coolant leaks
- Suspension auto leveling broken (but this had nothing to do with the suspension itself, rather curiously)
- Oil leak
- The fuel senders (this was recalled)
Overall, its shaping up to be a fairly reliable car from my standpoint (I'm up to 11k miles so far)
Second- the suspension technology is over 30 years old. Its a proven technology that has been employed by the trucking industry for 3 decades. Audi has had them in their cars (A6 Avant) for some years and I've never heard of a problem.
Third- This vehicle absolutely is the easiest car to drive. It is so forgiving that, in a really bad situation, you still have full control thanks to Quattro and ESP (Electronic Stability Program). You just can't get this think out of shape in normal driving. Period-
Fourth and Most Important- This vehicle is a TANK! I feel more secure in my allroad than I do sitting on my couch at home. Its perfect for transporting your family or other items. Put it this way, my fiance' was involved in an accident (rear/front -she's fine) and I insisted that she drive Herman until her car was fixed. I took the rental and used it when I needed. I wouldn't want my loved one in anything other than an allroad just for the security. Its easier to replace a bumper or quarter panel than someone you love.
The 2.7T is an amazing engine. That's part of the reason I am getting the allroad, along with the extra hauling capacity & luxury features not offered in the S4. (Memory seats, dual climate, heated steering wheel).
The majority of the turbo problems have been on S4s that have been modded with performance chips or driven extremely hard on the street or at track events. The turbos that have problems while being stock, seem to be surfacing within the first 5,000 miles so it is easily covered under warranty. If I had dependability worries, I wouldn't be buying the allroad.
The car rules (I've got 28,500 miles on mine already!) and they treat me right. And unlike some other dealers, the loaners are all Audis too.
Go for it!
