problem solved - just a dead battery!
so i drove up to ft.wayne indiana for t'giving in the ar. before leaving the car was tough to turn over again, but seemed alright after going a couple hundred miles then starting it up again. after leaving it parked for 2 days, the battery was totally dead. while pulling the battery out, I lost 1 socket - then found it by taking off the battery tray - at which time i cleaned the leaves out of the drain too - thanks ex-pzkw for the psa. anyways. took the battery to advanced auto parts, and it tested as having a dead cell. the battery in the car looked like it could have possibly been the original. so, i guess it had lived a good life. now if the new one dies after a couple of weeks, i'll have cause for concern.
sorry to ramble, but i remember someone a few weeks ago asking for resolutions to be posted.
btw, the trip from tn to ft.wayne is about 2000% more comfortable in the allroad than my previuos b5-s4.

not sure - i'll tell you tomorrow.
my in-laws were driving me crazy...
there was only one battery in stock that would work. so, i went ahead and picked it up. i'll just tack the answer onto this post tomorrow. j.
ps. i like to hear the outcomes/solutions to people's problems too. thanks for speaking up about it.

You'd remember: $80 2 yr free replacement vs $120 for the 3 yr, IIRC. I keep putting off buying one
for the S6 after doing the allroad's last year before the prices went up (I paid $79 for the 3 yr free replacement Platinum then).
