Remote lock failure

Remote lock failure
It was cold this morning, so I started the car with my valet key, locked it with my master key and then let it run on the driveway for a few minutes to warm up. When I returned to the car I found that the remote function did not work and I had to unlock manually, although the power locks did work with the key. I have been out to the car a few more times and the remote still doesn't work. I have also tried the following:
1. the spare remote in case of battery failure;
2. removing/replacing the batteries in the remote;
3. reset function from page 60 of the owner's manual.
If all else fails I will call the dealer, but before I do so does anyone out there have any idea how to fix this? Most likely a case of "pilot error"!
