Default Nope, you are being "profiled"...Audi is using this for a few security reasons

...and tracking purposes, the Software for your ECU will be uploaded most likely direct from Audi's secure (Linux based) Data center, possibly located in Germany.
So the "finger print" is set in your ECU, if the car ever get stolen it will leave a nice trace.

Default It's not about the owner, it's about the car, you could be owner #50, same thing would apply.

so please don't kill the messenger....;-)

I just had my ECU replaced a couple of weeks ago. The dealer never asked me for that information, but come to think of it, the registration was in the car and they made a copy of my driver's license when giving me the loaner.

Default They're protecting all our cars.. by having both a valid registration and photo id...

or the title to the car, they ensure someone doesn't hook your car up, tow it away, and buy a new ecu at the dealer with the intent of getting a new ecu with the corresponding immobilizer snyc code for instrument cluster. Kudos for them. Normally if you steal the car you get the reg in the glove box, or under the sterring column in an AR so requiring a valid photo ID is key. ;-)

Default ECU taking time.?. read on please...

I had a fried ECU as well(when the turbos went) and yes it not only took two weeks to find another one, but it took over three weeks to determine it was fried in the first place. BUT... what I did helped speed it up.

Call the parts department anonymosly and give them your VIN and ask them to locate a replacement ECU.. they will tell you if they are in the US or not. You can also ask them to search other dealer inventory or which warehouse it is in. When I had this information.. one was in the local AoA warehouse.. I called my service writer and gave him the info. It runed out the the Mechanic was searching/ordering a wrong ECU #

The replacment ECU # on my 03 was VERY different from the stock ECU # and the mechanic didn't know this, but parts did.
