Is the steering rack pinion tension adjustable?
My 2005 (87k) has developed a clunk in the steering wheel when traveling VERY slowly. I first notice it when turning my wheel more than 180deg. There is however no vibration at all when traveling at speed. I check the tie-rods for play and found nothing noticeable. Since the clunk really feels like it is in the steering column, I pulled the under-dash panel turned the steering column by hand. I can feel some play (and hear the clunk) between the steering column and the steering rack. It feels as if there is slop in the pinion. Is there any way to adjust this tension?

Interesting. I found this post on a search. My 1999 A6 has the same issue.
Earlier racks could be adjusted, but I couldn't find anything on the C5. I tried getting a socket on the two large nuts on the steering rack to snug out the slop, but both were tight. I'm going to replace the rack.
Did you solve your issue or still living with it?

its all electronic, the relay controlls the feel. also a good drain and flush of your rack will make it feel like new. thhe relay i beleive is the 605,but there are other ways to change the steering.... via uni. there might be a good oem option if you talk to a good audi parts person.
