Default Thinking of Converting.

I currently have a 98.5 A4 2.8 quattro. I am getting married, she has a kid, I have a 100lb dog and we need more room, I just got her a GTI and don't want to trade out so fast so I am thinking of getting a '01-'02 2.7T. I really want a 6 speed black, but don't know if I really can wait to find one for sale, where there is alot of Tips on the market now should I just opt for the Tiptronic. The A4 and GTI are standards and we do like the standard over and auto. Please help, does the trany will make a differance and a utility wagon?

Hold out for the manual, they're available.

Default you wont like the tip..

its better with the 4.2 most will say, but with the 2.7t is a bit of a downer. Between the BTL and then some tip lag, you as a stick driver, won't like it. IMHO..
Wait for a stick ar. I love it.

Default Wait for the right one, don't get a tip unless you're sure you can put up with it. (EDIT)

I waited 4 months until I found mine.

Most of the wait was waiting for the year/color/trans combo to show up within driving distance (ended up being ~250 miles away). If I wasn't so set on grey, it would have been a lot quicker.

Default Let's cat out of bag:

I just bought an '01 Tip AR last Saturday. I honestly thought that I would really hate the tip b/c I drive the 6sp A6, but it's not that bad. It is very smooth and better than most autos I have driven in the past. I even have the shifter buttons onthe wheel.

Verdict:

Not better in any way but tolerable.

Default the tip's tolerable in most situations, except when you want to tramp on it to pass on the highway.

It can be downright scary, when the allroad hesitates for about 2 full seconds before the gearing & turbos kick in. All-in-all, tip or manual, it's a great car!

Default What I would be scared of in looking at '01-'02 with tip--cat really out of bag

Not only will you have to deal with the BTL issue, but on most cars that haven't had major maintenance done yet, most are probably at the miles for:

1. TC failure <5HP19 tip exclusive>
2. Turbo lady singing
3. Air bag replacement
4. Timing belt

If these are already done, you're in better shape. If they aren't, eventually one or more of them will get you. If you're not prepared for it (or a couple of them at once) dollar-wise, these can be expensive "Welcome to the allroad Club" items.

Finding a stick won't buy you out of items 2-4, but it does get you out of an expensive item 1 AND no annoying BTL (at least not so easily induced).

Best bet is to find one under a comprehensive warranty or have some dollars under the mattress.

I've owned nearly every iteration of the 2.7T and 4.2. Although I learned to live with a 2.7T tip for four years with adjusted driving skills, it would be a distant dead last on my Audi powerplant list of choice. You can learn to adjust to the BTL, just be prepared to change your shorts a few times.

Default When and if you get nailed by BTL, you'll know it

I always got nailed by it on a left yield turn, where I was on the brake; hit gas to go quickly in front of traffic and the car just putts into the intersection, followed by huge rush of acceleration just as traffic is about to T-bone you. I just learned to get off the brake earlier and roll a bit before hitting the gas pedal.

I'm guessing that city folks will notice it before rural folks just because of traffic, people in a hurry, etc. and the more brake/throttle hits in succession.
