Default Windshield Distortion

My allroad's windshield has very noticeable distortion on the passenger side, when looking from the driver's side. It is not so apparent to the passenger. This has been a chronic problem with the A6, according to that Forum, and it has been mentioned here as well. I would appreciate comments from other new allroad owners who have the same defect. Have you brought this to the attention of your dealer? With what result? My dealer said "it is a warranty issue". I haven't pursued it further yet, but intend to do so.

Otherwise, the car is great, and I am enjoying it so far. (silver 6-speed, 1200 miles).

it's better but not perfect. Audi has a TSB for the problem with pre-printed defect sheets with a blank windsheilds to show the area of distortion.

Default Re: Windshield Distortion... I have the same problem

I took it up with the head of service at my dealer and he said that A6s frequently have that problem and if it is not too severe I should wait until near the end of the warrantee when I really need an unpitted windshield and then press the replacement issue. Like you I can see the distortion but my passenger can't. Since I wear bifocals anyway I have no problem ignoring it.

Default Am I nuts?

Now careful how you answer that but I have been reading about this problem for a while on these forums so why are cars still being produced with the same defect? Either you guys are too picky, but their acknowledgment of the problem discounts that theory, or the quality control sucks. High sales volume is a fools explanation.

This issue is what has kept us from purchasing an allroad. My wife noticed the distortion and I can't convince her it is minor. It does vary from car to car but they all seem to have it. We looked at some at another dealer Monday and they had an A4 that was just terrible. If you stand outside the car and look through the side window opening and out the windshield you will see waves in the objects you see. When you set in the car and look straight out to the front it is not noticable but when you look to the passenger side of the windshield you will see it. The angle you are to the glass seems to be key. My wife is short so she sets closer to the glass and has more of an angle when she looks out to anything but straight ahead. This is really frustrating cause I would really like to get one of these cars.

Default The only explanation I can think of is they (Audi)...

made a deal with a crappy glass producer and figure it's worth a 10-20% replacement rate (guessing) and the contract is not up yet. Hopefully they will get their heads out of their asses and find a glass company (any one would do--probably, even Chevy's come with better glass than this) that can make a front and rear windshield without waves. It's been going on for at least a couple years. The side windows don't seem to be affected (different company??).
I have some waviness in my 4.2, but nearly invisible looking straight forward, only see it when looking through the passenger side of the front window or when moving my field of vision quickly side to side. Not enough problem to warrant the risks of replacement (squeaks, leaks, etc.) Rear window has small area of distortion also. Maybe the glass maker has a bad astigmatism and to him it looks normal
Come on Audi--fire that crappy glassmaker!!!

Taking delivery this afternoon. Will look carefully at the windshield. Nice to know I have some back up. Hope I win the OEM windsheild lottery!

Default Re: Windshield Distortion....None to notice.

Took delivery of my Atlas Gray allroad this afternoon. No problems as mentioned. Interestingly as I drove my trade-in (97 Taurus), it did have a distortion looking across the windsheild as described. Good luck to all, looks like I got a good one.

Default Here's an answer for you - from an A4 owner:

I recently (March) bought a 96' A4. I must be lucky - no problems. My windshield is a bit wavy - but not even close to bad, barely noticable to be honest - I'm just ****. However, this topic has been discussed by many on the A4 board. Audi uses extremely thin windshield glass to save on weight. I think that's a bs explanation. However, what might help is that there is a very trusted aftermarket windshield maker that creates Audi specific glass, I think it's called PPG - post in the A4 board for the answer on where to get it. The windshield will cost about $300. When you look at the big picture, that's peanuts if you're buying a $40,000+ car. The one thing that is unexcusable is that out of 5 dealers in my area, I would only go to one for service.
