Audi e tron range?
#11
I pre-ordered and hope it's at least 250 miles. Will likely cancel if not. My Model S is rated at 265 but likely closer to 250 as it's aged. Keep in mind you generally charge EVs to 90% capacity for long-term battery longevity so I get around 225 miles per charge. Anything less just doesn't cut it for my daily use and especially when lower cost models like the Model 3 and Chevy Bolt have more range.

The 250 miles number came from a straight conversion of 400 km, which is Audi's estimate range for Europe's brand new WLTP standards. In the US, we use EPA standards, which results in lower (but more realistic) range estimates.
One thing to keep in mind, e-tron Quattro has not yet been certified with range estimate anywhere... the 400km is Audi's WLTP estimate, not the actual certified EU market WTLP range. So how do you interpret this? I think generally speaking, car companies try to be conservative when they quote EV ranges before certification is done. So maybe the actual certified range will be 420 km.
Once we have the official WTLP range, then we quickly estimate the EPA range by applying an EPA "fudge" factor.
Model / WLTP Range = Straight conversion / EPA Range / "Fudge" factor
BMW i3 (2018) / 235km = 146 miles / 114 miles / -22%
Chevy Bolt / 380 km = 236 miles / 238 miles / +0%
Hyundai Ioniq / 204 km = 127 miles / 124 miles / -2%
Jaguar I-Pace / 470 km = 292 miles / est 220 miles / -24%
Kia Soul / 185 km = 115 miles / 93 miles / -19%
Nissan Leaf / 280 km = 177 miles / 151 miles / -15%
VW eGolf (2017) / 219km = 136 miles / 125 miles / -8%
Audi e-Tron / est 400km = 248 miles / ???
Note: Tesla has not submitted its vehicles for WLTP testing so no one knows how it perform under the new standards. And Jaguar only released a preliminary EPA estimate, not a final one.
A few things stands out when you look at all the EVs that are sold in the US and EU (and thus have both ratings):
1. GM and Hyundai have no difference between WLTP and EPA range, so it is possible for Audi to achieve 250 mile range in both ratings.
2. Jaguar I-Pace is not a good benchmark to compare... the power system (battery/software) seems to have been engineered specifically to achieve a high WLTP range but comes up really short on EPA cycle, at least in estimates by Jaguar.

Thanks, bzat. Good info.
This highlights my issue. A quick trip to the airport is 60 miles for me, and the e-Tron idea works great. But... I only need an A4 size car for that.
But, to replace my Q7 won’t work if i need to get my kid to college 239 miles away. At least not on one charge.

I had a closer look at the specs released for the e-tron. I feel like Audi will need to release a version with a bigger battery pack and stronger electric motors no? On paper it seems to be the slowest amongst Tesla / Mercedes / Jag.

Its been mentioned a few times that there will be an S version of the etron but its unknown if this will be drive train upgrades or just features/cosmetics. Tesla has a good lead on the traditional automakers with range, efficiency, and performance. A 95kwh battery is pretty big so its unclear why the e-tron will have close to the range of a 75kwh Tesla Model X. Overall, I think they are marketing to their traditional buyers rather than trying to steal Tesla fans, which I think is the smart move for them. The current e-tron specs should be good enough for their first mass market BEV. The e-tron GT based on the Porsche Taycan chassis will be a good second.

I had a tour of the Belgian factory about 3 months ago, and the guy who showed us around was very clear about this: there will be a 3-motor version a few months after the standard 2 motor release...

Did you see the article that the “GT” e-Tron will “favor performance over range”. Ugh. Really? Less than 250 mile range (i.e. comparing to the e-Tron) is really going to be a detractor. And not be up there with Tesla...

I’m still hoping for a TT/RS4 Avant sized e-Tron. :-)
