Default Nagging Issues

I have had my e-tron since July. It has been a fantastic car so far, except for two nagging issues that started popping up about a month ago:
  1. I keep getting a "Central Locking System Malfunction" alert. The only thing I seem to be noticing is that on occasion, the outside door handles seem to "stick" in the slightly open position. I have to roll down the window and push the handle back in. Has anyone else encountered that problem?
  2. I started getting a "Low Windshield Washer Fluid" alert about a month ago. I was a bit perplexed as I had barely used the windshield washer prior to getting the alert. I tried it a couple of times and it seemed to still have fluid in the tank. Last week, I finally got around to topping it off. It's made no difference and the alert is permanently displayed on my dashboard. Does anyone know of a way to reset the light without a trip to the dealer?

TSB 2053997/2 - Customer states that they go through a lot of washer fluid.

I don't understand why Audi dealers don't perform all these TSBs on new e-trons before they leave the lot. It just creates more work for them down the line and creates frustrated customers that have to visit the dealer to get things fixed (or end up living with a sub-par experience). It seems pretty obvious to me -- when a customer buys a new Audi off the lot, part of the "prep work" should be that it goes into the shop and a technician ensures that all the firmware is up-to-date. Would take like an hour, and save MANY hours of headaches down the line for both Audi customer service and the customer.

I get the central locking error occasionally: it's always a stuck door handle. This is actually one of my only real complaints with the car is that the door handle design sucks. It can pinch you if you're not careful and I've had them freeze in sleet / freezing rain.

You're correct, in that you have to hit it back into position to get the alarm to go away. Not a big deal, just a bit annoying...

I've had the same problem with the windshield washer fluid. Took it to the dealer and first they said a rat had chewed the line and they would have to remove the bumper and replace it (not covered under warranty and could cost up to $2k), but then the service guy did a little more research and determined that the washer fluid mix they used, as required in California, did not work with Audi. They refilled it with a new mix (quite pricey) and sent me on my way. That was a month ago, and the "fill washer fluid" light just popped on again this morning. I've used it once. Very discouraging. I'm sure now they're going to say they have to do the bumper work.
If this was the only problem maybe I wouldn't feel so bad, but I've also gotten a warning light almost from day one that comes and goes telling me my license plate light is faulty. The service team can find nothing wrong with it. Very annoying.

Other drivers on this forum have stated that there is some sort of relationship between the washer fluid use and the license plate light warning. Make sure that you mention it to your service tech when getting the TSB serviced.

I had the washing fluid TSB done last week. I do not hear the pump going off every time I start driving. So I am hopeful that this will fix it as I had to refill every month myself. So I second pointing to the TSB.

I had warnings about the license plate light and then the rear light which started to flicker at times. Whenever I checked the license plate light immediately after getting the error it appeared to be working. The dealer just replaced both if them without any hesitation really. If you get that code repeatedly, I am not sure why your dealer is not willing to do anything.

With regards to the windshield washer fluid issue, received more details from my dealership regarding the TSB addressing this issue and a software fix. I can hear the washer fluid motor turn on within a minute of driving away every single time as its trying to clean the sensor, so this seems to be the issue causing us to go through so much fluid especially in winter conditions. This is Audi Canada TSB resolution but should also apply to Audi USA:

TSB 2053997/2
  • The vehicle is equipped with a laserscanner J1122 that has its own autonomous cleaning system.
  • If the laserscanner recognizes dirt on its screen, a message is sent to the onboard supply control module, J519 (address word 0009). Then it instructs the windscreen washer pump, J1100 to clean the laserscanner. The laserscanner is only cleaned while driving.
  • On the A6, A7, and Q8 vehicles the laser scanner is located in the right upper single frame area.
  • On A8 and Audi e-tron quattro vehicles the laser scanner is located in the center lower single frame area below the front license plate holder (if equipped).
  • As a result, the customer can get the impression that the headlight washer system activates itself. Depending on weather and road conditions (like snow, slush or dirt roads) the laserscanner might clean itself frequently.
  • If the sensor is very dirty, for example, due to driving over dirt roads or through slush, the laserscanner might be unable to clean itself. After three tries, the cleaning function goes into a 45-minute timeout which is reset by an ignition cycle.
  • If the dirt restricts the detection capabilities of the laserscanner, a message “Adaptive driving assist: limited availability, see owner’s manual” is displayed in the instrument cluster and certain driver assistance features might not be available [this has happened to me frequently especially with all the salt on the roads up here in winter (Atlantic Canada)]
As this also leads to higher consumption of the washer fluid, the customer might be concerned about excessive washer fluid use.

There is a software update for the laserscanner, J1122 (address word 00CD) that addresses the problem.

I think that TSB also comes with a software update to improve the algorithms for detecting dirt. Before the update, it would activate no matter what. I could leave my garage with everything perfectly clean and it would activate. So there were some serious bugs that they seemed to have fixed.
