Default Software and map updates?

Hi everyone,

I just got a used 2019 e-tron and I am trying to figure out the currently installed version of the MMI navigation maps and the overall software, as well as how to get the latest versions. The former is clearly out of date and I am hoping it can be updated OTA (do I need to trigger this somehow?). I want to update the latter to make sure I get the additional mileage update for the 2019 models. Any tips on how to go about getting this update?

Thanks for the help!

Congratulations on your etron. The ONLY thing that the Quattro Etron does OTA is Navigation Map Updates. For all other software/firmware you have to take it into Service. OTA Map Updates should be included in the basic CARE Audi Connect wifi service which, as I recall is for 10 years, and is provided through AT&T. It's been awhile since I set mine up (Nov 2019), but my car pretty much checks for map updates every time I start up my car. As I recall the automatic map updates are switched on an off via the MMI: SETTINGS-->System Maintenance-->Automatic Online Map Updates. You need to have the CARE wifi connection active.

Updates are just that--UPDATES. If the map info in the car has been corrupted generally the update will not work. You have to take the car to the Dealer for them to load a full uncorrupted version of maps.

The o e thi g that I would add to the comments above about the car OTA updates is that they appear to be geo fenced and are downloaded based off of the time the car drives in a particular state. If you don't spend enough time driving in North Carolina, just because your car is downloading Virginia does not mean it is going to download NC until you notice it downloading the first morning you start the car up on your Outer Banks vacation.

The other strange thing you cannot do is speed the process up by having the car use your home Wi-Fi. It is going to use the cars modem no matter what you do and it will take a while.

Audi does not acknowledge the chart above, though. I gave it to my dealer and the response was still that you need an active subscription in order to get the maps to update. I went back and forth with Audi and they eventually agreed to give me the Audi Connect services for a couple if months. So the maps now updated but as pointed out above only for the state I am in. I do not understand why Audi does not provide map updates on their web site anymore. They do in Europe. There is a TSB outlining this, i.e. the need for the Audi connect plan. That TSB also mentions that Audi intended to make the maps available to download in the US but that never materialized.

I agree with @ThomasW I had the same issue. Was told it is OTA where in fact nothing was downloading without active Connect PRIME. Took a visits to dealer, lot of calls to Audi America and hours of explanations... Finally got them convinced to activate 30 days of PRIME and next day I got a message showing new maps are ready for download! I just do not understand why would they spend hours on the phone negotiating service that costs $36 /month and waste their time? It is less expensive to pay $36 vs salary of the person who seats on the phone and review the case, isn't it? Why things with Audi always have to be so difficult?! And many of those calls (and e-mails) I was being told my maps are the latest version and telling me to give up! BS! I compared it to some other versions here on the forum and mine were older. There were new roads built in my area for years and Audi maps still would not show it but all the the others like Google maps, Waze or Apple maps would have them updated year ago! The day I got the update, those new roads showed up! And Audi America would tell me I have the latest Liars, cannot trust them at all. So my recommendation is if they do not agree to give you Connect PRIME for free, just pay that $36 and do not waste your time. It is good to have latest maps since you want all new roads and possibly shortest distances to drive while getting directions. Same as what @ThomasW said, for me. Once my Audi Connect subscription expired, OTA map updates ceased for me.

That's really amazing! This is the chart I received with my car and was consistent with the features listed for the 2019 on the AudiUSA website. It is true, that without the PRIME connect subscription you do not get the additional nav data and traffic alerts from Google Maps, but the basic Audi Navigation maps is independent of that and are offered through the free CARE Connect. Since I renewed my subscriptions I cannot speak to the loss of service once a Prime subscription expired.
