CEL is on. Vag-Com says engine speed sensor. Are they difficult to replace?

Nope. When the problem initially manifested, the CEL would blink on and off...
sometimes staying on for a few minutes, then going out. Also, tach needle would bounce around, even though I maintained a constant speed. Now, the tach is off by 500 - 1000 RPM.
