Exploding turbocharger (bad thing to happen when trying to merge)
The car is completely stock aside from a Stromung exhaust, so this seems rather early for the turbo to fail (144,000 miles). My guess is the previous owner mustn't have been very diligent about keeping good oil in the car.
Anyway, I've been searching around for info on turbo rebuilds for this car and have come up relatively empty handed. Do any of you know what I'm likely to be in for regarding this? I have a nagging feeling this is going to be very, very expensive...
I would not recommend a second hand turbo unless you knew the car it came from was not over-boosting it, and you knew what to look for. Usually getting a KKK shop to pull apart and check it out is cheap, ~1 hrs labour.
In reality rebuilding a KKK is actually very reasonable. Look here for list of approved dist. Shop around.
But the alternatives e.g. GT2871/K26 (see 034efi) will cost around same as a new K26 and run just fine on stock software and definetly more interesting when you're ready to take it to next level.
The GT28 is about 71mm which is 2.8" inches. larger. or the 76mm which is 3"
GT30 typically comes with a 3" compressor wheel.
