Ok, so two funny things about my MPG
The first is, I think I found a big part of the problem and I feel like a moron for not seeing it sooner. My coolant is never getting up to "normal" temps according to the guage, and that certainly won't help matters much. The second thing is I tried what was suggested in my last post (driving at 70 instead of 55) and my MPG went from 17 to 19.5... go figure!

Before I go ordering parts, riddle me this...
What is "normal" on your coolant gauge? Mine is just barely getting over the first single mark to the left of center. I can see the two dots on the mark to the right of center, and I was assuming that to be the "normal" position, but am I right or wrong in that assumption?
Dammit, I need to fix my friggin' bentley CD!!!

Just did mine this week. Had a Cali. thermostat, didn,t go higher than 80deg.
It was really stuck in good, but it finally came out. All in all, a 2 hour job, after I drained out some fluids. Now, I have heat quickly

same for me - sucker was seized in there and destroyed coming out. all happy now tho.
longest part of the job was repeated filling/running/draining with distilled H2O to flush coolant system of green stuff so I could put in VAG purple stuff in.

another tip if you decide to flush all coolant - use bleeder screw going into heater core
there have been a ton of posts on "how do you get all the coolant, I can't get it all out of the heater core..." and "older I5's had a vent at the back of the engine but ANN doesn't seem to"....
well, I just noticed recently that there is what looks to be a bleeder fitting on the driver side of the heaterbox where the coolant lines go in.
I'm pretty sure if you crack that once the coolant is draining it will help drain the coolant fully (aka it is exactly the @*&$#ing thing I was looking for when I kept trying to get the last bit of coolant out...)
