Default Control Module Failure

So I made an appointment to bring my car in to get the KD2 update due to issues with the digital key and lo and behold, the very moment I was driving to my dealership, I got a traffic sign recognition malfunction. I tried cycling the car off and on a few times and the fault wouldn't go away. I received a text from my SA this morning stating that a control module failed, and they will need to order a new module from Germany. No idea on lead times or when the part will be in from Germany...

Three days and the part is probably in Canada or NJ. But even if it is in Germany, they will have it installed in a few days. Have them confirm the shipping tomorrow.

Part is probably not in the US. With tariffs it is uneconomical for Audi to bring a part into the US before it is needed.

Maybe. I have never really understood what parts are where. Either way, it is still a DHL flight away. So three days for the part to be in his technician's hand.

I had 9 safety errors in my Q6 Sportback including the traffic sign error. They replaced my front camera in the rear view mirror which didn't help. They then said it was the ECM Driver Assist System which required tearing out the trunk area. The opcode was 90931950. That didn't help one bit!

Have they done the KD2 update and THEN found the ECM to be bad? I'd say that if they haven't done the KD2 update, insist they do that and let you drive for a few days. The KD2 update cured a majority of my safety errors but not all. I can clearly state that the ECM was an expensive exercise in ripping my car apart without benefit.

My SA mentioned that the part is estimated to arrive the 1st week of Dec from Germany. It’ll be in service closer to two months by that point. Going to retain a lawyer at the 30-day mark to start the lemon process.

Did they do the KD2 update? Make sure they do it now and retest. My car had all kinds of codes pointing to the ECM and it was a red herring. My car got ripped apart for no good reason.

As for buyback, don't make the same mistake I made. With the part not due to December, Audi Corporate has proven they are a foolish buyback machine and you will qualify in most states. Apply soon, whether you intend to give it back or not. They have 60 days to review the application and they are taking every day of it with my request. They are sluggish in getting you the paperwork in the first place. My car was purchased on July 31 and returned to the dealer the next day for serious safety messages - and I'm not up for buyback review until November 16th! The Consumer Resolution group apparently gives you options including keeping the car for a set settlement amount or replacing the vehicle. I'll keep you posted on how my case goes.

Agree with @BocaGuy - insist they do the KD2 update - very likely the module issue is a red herring. Bear in mind the dealer isn't always going to do the quickest or easiest fix - they earn more Audi-dollars the longer they have to work on the car - it's in their interests to replace a few bits and do the update. It's your car, the bulletin for KD2 is out (make sure you mention some of the issues it quotes) - tell them to get it done.

I pushed for the KD2 update, but apparently there is a technical service bulletin out that dictates replacing this control module when some of those faults show. My dealership is insisting on replacing this module first per the technical bulletin. I get the feeling my SA doesn’t quit know what to do but to be fair, I’m starting to see other folks on Reddit waiting for the same part with similar issues.

Please keep us posted! Did you retain a lawyer or are you working directly with Audi corporate?
