Is 2 years about the shortest wait list

A lot can change in that timeframe, people usually drop of lists due to changing situations.
I'd try calling around, you might be able to find a dealer with a short list where your chances of moving up are high.

There are more R8's on the way, people will drop off the lists, and while nobody here believes me I think these cars will be readily had (in some areas) at MSRP in one year. Not that many people have $140 large to drop on a car even if it is the coolest Audi ever.
I've heard of one dealer selling an extra allocation car (not a customer order) at MSRP but requiring the buyer to sign a purchase agreement that provided the dealer with the right of first refusal if the car is resold within a year.
A two year wait is routinely quoted on the 997TT, but you could probably go buy one tomorrow. Ferrari is the only manufacturer with the mystic and limited production to routinely warrant paying over MSRP.
I hope I am wrong and Audi really gets this one right.

Same thing happened when I was looking for a Corvette when they first came out...
Dealers were tacking on premiums on new cars and they were selling presold customer units to walk in customers...it was a real mess.
They made a killing in the short term, but you can be sure they lost a ton of potential customers. A year later, dealers were sitting with tons of inventory. They had turned off alot of people, who eventually bought something else....me included.

I think you are right on target, a similiar thing happened when the NSX came out ...
If you remember, 1991 models (1st model year) were sold at a huge premium ... a year later my family purchased a 1992 for $5k off MSRP and the car was in stock (not a pre-order).

this car will be too hot for the next 12 months or so.
you won't find an unspoken for car unless you wonder into the dealer at the moment he hangs up with the guy who had ordered it and just backed out. even then the dealer wil likely call up the next guy in his line.
you have to remember that they also make more 997 TT's than this car, from what i understand.
after 12-16 months the lists will be shorter, and the hard one to get will be the V10. the V10 will make the V8 more accressible since many V8 owners will be selling theirs.

Things change...
Some of you won't agree with this, but I think 2 year waitlists are mostly urban myths. I was talking to my local dealer buddy a couple weeks ago and Yes, they currently have 15 people on a "list" for an unknown number of cars they expect to receive in the future. But as cars really become available for order, he and I expect many of those people will drop off. Car enthusiasts aren't the most patient people in the world, I've gone through 24 cars in my 34 years of driving, longest I've ever owned one was 3 years. The R8 is state of the art right now, but who knows what other cool options there will be two years from now. If I was committed to buying one as soon as possible, I would talk to as many dealers as possible, despite their protestations, ask them nicely to give you a call if a car becomes available. I believe you will get a shot to order or buy within a year.
