Default Is there a power antenna turn on lead I have to connect to in the factory harness? more...

Well, as I am completely gutting the old system, I have no need to use any wires that were previously going to the old Sympony unit.

I'm getting power & acc power from the main input to the fuse panel
Ground from the chasis
signals out go through RCAs to the amp, then through new wiring to the speakers

So, my only concern is with this antenna. Assuming I get the power antenna adapter that Siberian mentions in a post below (and the item in the pic), is there still a wire in the factory harness that I have to connect to, to turn on or power the antenna? Or is this taken care of with that red wire on the adapter?

Thoughts?
Mark P

Default that red wire......

on the adaptor shown in your pic... will hook up to the power ant. lead wire from your wiring harness adaptor. (I assume you are using a wiring harness adaptor so you don't cut any factory wires). If you look on the schematic for the adaptor it'll show a specific wire for power antenna. Just hook it up to that one and you're set.

I can't remember what color that wire was.

Default But that doesn't seem right...

Are you suggesting that red wire sends a signal back into the car's wiring harness to turn on the antenna?

I think you said that I connect that red wire to the FACTORY car wiring (not the aftermarket stereo?). Why would I do this - the car's factory wiring would not "know" when I turn on my aftermarket stereo in order to power the antenna.

Here's the two options:
Either the red wire is an input to the antenna adapter which provides power to it *OR* it is an output of the adapter that signals another device to turn on.

If it's the first (which I'd be more likely to imagine), I should connect that wire to the Power Antenna wire on my *aftermarket* stereo, not to the wiring harness (Factory)

OKAY, I've been thinking about this and I think I may have figured it out...

You are assuming that by me using a wiring harness "kit", that I will be connecting the power ant lead of my aftermarket stereo to the Factory wiring harness, thus it does not matter where I connect the red wire, because the aftermarket is connected to the Factory wiring. HOWEVER, in my case, I have not yet needed to use any factory wiring (thus my original question) and thus my Factory wiring is not connected to my aftermarket stereo.

Okay, this is just a lot of babbling. Please forgive me.

I think the red wire needs to *receive* power when you turn on your stereo, so thus it should be connected to the power antenna output wire of my aftermarket stereo.

My only other concern (orig question) is if I need to hook the output of my aftermarket stereo (power antenna lead) to the factory wiring.

Oh, and I do not know of anyone that makes a wiring harness kit (so you don't have to cut wires) for an Audi - is there any?

enough.
Mark P

Default Mark, ignore my last post.... here's the right answer....

Okay, first of all, sorry I goofed on my last post... it's been awhile since I fixed mine (using the exact same adaptor shown in your pic).. and I gave you the wrong info. (hey, it's monday gimme a break!) Anyway, that red wire hooks up to the power antenna lead off of your HEAD UNIT... NOT off the in-coming harness from inside the car.

Trust me... I promise this is the right way to do it. I looked up the archive of my original post from early June explaining exactly how I fixed it (and I posted that just hours after I actually installed it).

Okay, go install it and lemme know how it works. It should be fine. I had absolutely no am reception b4 I put it in, and now I get great am.

sorry I confused ya!

Default get it at any local stereo shop. I got mine at Best Buy......

however you most likely won't find it on the shelf with the rest of the accessories..... You have to go the shop "around back" where they do installs. Ask for an VW power antenna adaptor. If they do installs there they HAVE to have it. It's an essential item for any VW or Audi install. It cost about $8 bucks.

Hey!

Scosche makes a wiring harness for the Audi. You will not have to cut any factory wires.

http://www.Scosche.com/</a

Default With all this talk of power antennas etc...

I just went to radio shack and bought a GM antenna adapter. It looked like the right size to fit into my Kenwood headunit so I took it home. I cut off the end on the antenna wire and soldered the +/- wires to the appropriate sides of the GM adapter. Works fine... am I missing something??
Dan
