Default Claying question - instructions say to use QD and wipe off in 2-foot sections

Does the quick detailer (in this case I'll be using Pinnacle clay and detail spray) leave a residue that I need to wash off after claying?

My procedure will be:
Wash with dawn
Dry
Spray and clay 2 foot sections and wipe off with MF
Klasse AIO
Klasse SG

Default That's why I usually wash the car after claying, to get rid of the residue....

Since I follow up the clay with IP, FP and GEPC I typically don't bother with the second wash. If you're going straight from claying to AIO it may be better to wash it in between.

Is there something I should use before AIO to increase the gloss (my car is silver)

Default Don't use quick detailer.

The use of quick detailer as a lube for claybar is a marketing scam perpetrated by the manufacturers who just happen to sell both. Yes, it will work, but it's a waste of money and effort. Just use liquid car wash soap, diluted with some water. I use about 2 or 3 times the amount of soap I use to wash, in about 1/4 of a bucket of water. It works better that QD, costs much less per use, and you can easily slather it on freely with a clean sponge or wash mitt instead of having to spray, spray, spray quick detailing over and over again. If you enjoy the exercise, you can put it in a spray bottle if that'll make you happy. You'll still save money.

I wish I had a bottle of quick detailing spray for every time I've posted about this.

Default So I assume for that use some cheap soap would be best, don't need to use my P21S

Is it about a 50/50 cut of soap and water, or more like 20/80 of soap and water?

Default 20/80 will work fine. Yeah, you could use the cheap stuff.

In fact someone posted once that he uses Dawn instead of car wash soap. Cheaper still. And it's removing old wax as you go. The beauty of this method is that as you finish an area, just rinse it off with the hose...you know it's clean with no residue, because all you used on it was soap and water.

Default Perfect, thanks a lot! I have a lot of these Meguiar soap sheet things now lying around

since I ran out of good soap yesterday I had to go get some (that's all I could find locally), so now I guess I have a use for them ;-).

Thanks!

Default Do those soap sheets....

...create the same kind of "slippery soap feel" that you get with a liquid? I have a free sample at home, but never got around to trying it this past weekend. My concern is whether you get the same kind of lubricating effect from the sheets. Dipping your fingers into the solution and then rubbing them together should tell you all you need to know. You do not want or need suds for claying. In fact you really want just the opposite.

Actually, no, they felt "dry." I didn't like the soap at all, I think I'll just use Dawn then

Default I meant once dissolved in water.

But if you have a liquid, you're safe using that.
