Has anybody seen this paint deterioration?
Hi,
my 2002 A4 1.8T denim blue shows for the last year a weird dulling of the paint on the roof (pictures below), and to lesser extent, on hood and trunk. A simple waxing doesn't make it go away.
The pattern looks interesting, could that be from thin wet foil sticking to the roof during the original shipping?
I had a (maybe unrelated) paint issue where marks from tape (I assume for the wrap from the shipping) showed up a few months on the sides of the roof after I bought the car. I complained to the dealer and they detailed it away. It came back after two years, and the dealer detailed it again. This also is slowly reappearing, but I'm out of warranty now.
Could it be that there is something wrong with the paint used, or some weird effect from the shipping back then? Or is it just plain paint aging?
Also, how can I best get rid of it?
Thanks a lot!
Zak

What I would do is follow up with the dealer again. Since you initially brought the issue to their attention, and they attempted to resolve the problem, but the SAME problem persists, they should still treat this as a warranty item, mainly because it was brought to their attention during the warranty period, and was not addressed in an acceptable fashion.
It's clearly not environmental, as the patterns do appear to be caused by a film applied to the surface. The protective wrap applied during transport typically covers the hood, trunk, and roof, so that would be a prime suspect. They will of course say they ship thousands of cars using this wrap and it doesn't cause damage. Your question should be "what the hell else would have been applied to the hood, roof and trunk during this car's lifetime??". Anyway, push the dealer to call AoA and have them evaluate this under warranty. Unfortunately, if a mild polish doesn't clear this up, you may be in need of a repaint which may impact the resale value of your car.
Not sure if that's the case here, but the pattern was similar.
