when does stuff go wrong?
i'm fairly new to detailing.. just got myself a PC and menzerna kit. i plan on detailing my car when i get home this spring break, and was thinking.. if some friends ask me to do their car (for a price of course), is it a good idea for a novice? really, the only thing i am worried about is messing someones car up. is this something to be worried about? do procedures differ much for other paint colors (i hear black is a tricky color)? as i understand it, with newer cars, you really shouldn't polish them, but just do a wax coat?
Also, where do swirls come from? my car is silver and i have yet to see or produce a swirl on it.

This is tricky.
Lets begin.
You car is Silver. You have Swirls. You simply cant see them as easily.
Balck is not tricky. Its a bitch. All dark colors are. It has just as many swirls as your silver does. You can just see them.... a lot. Make a mistake on black, obvious, make it on silver, barely noticeable.
If you have friends that wouldnt notice if you painted their car, then go ahead and "detail" them and make some coin. If they are **** enthusiast types, dont practice on their rides.
Newer cars generally require less in the way of "paint correction" i.e. polish, but we do it all the time, you simply stay away from aggressive pads or polish.
Get some practice and good luck!

Poo hits the fan when you hurry.
Plan out your detail, give yourself time, don't rush and you will avoid most issues. Push your self to meet an imaginary time goal and you be wondering how you dropped the PC on to the hood.
