I just picked up my first Audi, a project car that needs work. The first thing I want to tackle is its brakes -- they are terrible. The ABS light is on, and stomping on the brakes at speed gives alarmingly long stop distances. At a stop sign, if I push hard, I can feel the pedal bottom out.

1) From what I have read, I'll most likely need to repair/replace the ABS module. Is this something that VAG COM can confirm before I throw money at it? If that module is bad, could it have anything to do with the poor breaking force?
2) After checking the basics (pads, rotors, and brake fluid), any suggestions on other culprits to look for as to why it has such poor brake force?
