Default registering a car....

like my earlier post stated, i finally bought a project car. now i have to register it. is there a time limit to when you can do this? do you have to pay taxes (what %) on a 91 since it's 10+ years old?
i don't plan on even driving it until mid to late spring.

Default you have to pay taxes since you bought it out of state I believe....

as far as registering it, don't think you have to do that until you drive it an insure it. Then again, registration is cheap, and the car needs no insurance really until it's on the road.

Default I think you pay the state tax rate which is like 7.0% or 7.5%

...so $98-105? I'm not sure though.

Default It is simply the sales tax on the amount you paid for where you live. I paid the taxes on a car I

bought out of state to Cook County and it was the sales tax for the county. I got away with that rather than City of Chicago sales tax which is higher. You need a bill of sale and fill out the tax form and you have to process the proof that you paid the taxes before you can register the car. You can look up and also get some of the forms online from the Illinois Secretary of State for the registration requirements and then I think it linked you to the tax forms from there as well at the county level.

Default Re: registering a car....

If you bought at a dealer, you will pay the state sales tax at around 7% (depends which county you register in) If you purchased private you will pay a flat fee set by the state for the year of the car (I belive any car 10 years or older is 35.00) You don't need to plate the car any time soon unless the town you live in has an ordinace against an unplated car sitting. You DO need to pay the taxes and change the title within 30 days or face a penalty. I think it's 20% of total purchase price or taxes whichever is smaller per month that you did not register.

Default The rates are on one of Illinois sites. They are a pain to find. What the deal is

It's really cheap. It's not based on any percentage of the county you live like some have said. They have a set rate schedule based on model yr and stuff.

Good news is, it's going to be really cheap. Don't sweat it.

Default I just bought my S4 out of state and...

the taxes I paid for it was only like $135. I bought it from a private owner and I think they charged me the that amount based on the year my car was.

This is what you can find at Illinois DMV web site:

Check if vehicle use tax must be paid. Tax must be paid on all vehicle sales between individuals. The amount of tax is based on the model year of the vehicle if the selling price is less than $15 thousand or on the selling price if it is $15 thousand or more.

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/vehicles/apply.html</a

Default I learned the hard way, Vernon Hills po-po got me.

Back when I bought the A, last summer I didn't have the registration sticker on my plates, in fact I was on my temp plate 4 months overdue.. (oops).. Vernon Hills Po-Po pulled me over and I had my paperwork for the registration, told the guy I was on the way to the DMV and noted I knew the chief, cop appologized for pulling me over and told me to have a good one. I would suggest doing it sooner than later, especially if you can't get pulled over if ya know what I mean.
