Default StopTech pad question...

i run hawk HPS for street pads and blues for the track, both sets are hard to switch...i mean really hard. basically feels like the pads are too 'tall' (lack of a better word) for the caliper.
any tips i am missing, besides shaving down the edges?

Default I've seen ST calipers that cause lots of problems...

and some that accept the pad with little more than a tap with a mallet. Just make sure the sides of the pads are shaved down enough.

Default I always dremel the paint off of the top and bottom of the backing plate before installation

also put a layer of anti-seize there and make sure the pad abuttment plates (the L shaped brackets that keep the pads from moving up or down or touching the hat) are completely clean. The abuttment plates are your clearance impediments. If you look at them closely you will notice the top one is slightly bent so that there is a "bump" in it - this maintains pressure on the backing plate of the pad to keep it from rattling/squeaking. That's a good thing, and why it must be a bit tough to swap the pads. If you keep everything clean and friction free it should help though. Tap the pads in with a mallet. DO NOT FORCE THEM.

Removing pads is easiet by grabbing the backing plates with a pair of channel locks and jimmying them back and forth in and out while pulling rearward. Also note that the bridge retaining bolts should NEVER be overtightened. They only need to be tight enough not to back themselves out. They are not bearing load.

A well maintained set of Stoptech brakes will give you no issues, but there are a few tricks to making it a bit easier. Hope this helps...

Default That is really weird......

.... I have never had and issue with mine but I know of a few others (even running the same pads as me) that have to grind them suckers down to make them fit. I wonder if some runs of the calipers were not quite within spec?

that is common. grind the long sides and you'll be fine.

Default Shave down the edges. On my TT, if they don't slip in, then off to belt sander.

For mine, a little under 130mm is what it takes for me.
