What's the sales tax for a used car purchase...

...purchased outside of Cook County.

I live in Cook County, but not in Chicago.

You have to look at form RUT 50

Don't worry, Friends of G - Rod will come looking for you regardless!

I bought and registered the 911 in June of last year, paid the taxes, title and registration. I get a certified letter after Thanksgiving saying that FMV of the car was higher than what I claimed and I owed more in taxes. What a scam! 7.25% (I just bought one and that's the percentage on form RUT-25, paid when I registered...

...since vehicle was purchased in Wisconsin).

I, too, am suburban Cook Country.

And tax is on net purchase price, discount and/or trade-in deducted.

I thought this was the case,but was suprised when I bought my 08 A6 from Tim at Napleton in....

Rockford, I paid 6.25% even though I live in Dupage. Nice savings there on a $40K+car!

Only certain counties bill after registration.

Rockford has the lowest tax rate in the state at 6.25% Here is an example.

If you live in Chicago and buy a car in Rockford

You pay 6.25%
City of Chicago tacks on 1.25%
Cook County tacks on .75%

So your total tax is 8.25% when it is all said and done.

If you live in a surrounding county, there is no surcharge. Cook county is the only county that bills.
