Off-Topic posts in A4 forum
I would suggest that moderators announce a stricter policy on off-topic posts and gradually begin enforcing it. Eventually, after people have time to adjust, it would be nice if all off-topic posts were moderated fairly quickly. Then people would stop posting them.
Rather than deleting OT posts, which can annoy forum members, perhaps you could just move them to the OT forum?
This is a wonderful site. Just a suggestion to help keep it that way.
I happen to enjoy the chitchat to some extent. It adds atmosphere to the forum. However I do agree that it can get out of hand at times (ok, a lot of times, and especially on Fridays)...
I bet if posters could check an "Off-Topic" box when they type in their post (like the "Show email address" box) that many would voluntarily use it. You could then enable viewing of these posts via User Preferences, in the same way that viewing moderated posts is handled now.
This could cut down on a lot of work for the moderators, provide readers not interested in the off-topic discussion somewhat of a reprieve, and still let the more talkative forum members have their say. The default for non-members would of course have to be to not show Off-Topic posts.
I realize there are still going to be be people who wouldn't use someting like this, but I'm still willing to bet that the majority would.
