4000S rear main seal replacement questions
A friend is replacing the rear seal on his wife's '87 4000S/auto and is looking for pointers. Any good hints? Anyone have time to highlight the process. Apparently the book is all but informative.

You have to pull the tranny and the oil pan.
The part is $60 at the dealer, shared with the A4 1.8T so they will have it in stock. Get the oil pan gasket while you're there, probably $15.
Replace the whole aluminum piece. If you try and skimp by just replacing the seal, I guarantee that it will leak.<p>Todd W
