85 5000 CD -- my spedometer and odometer just stopped working! The tach still works fine. I assume it is electronic. How hard of a fix is this? Anyone else have this problem? It has disabled my computer mileage tracking system, as well as cruise control. Besides a bad unit, could there be another cause to this problem.

it's not (sort of) not electrical.
ten years ago audi still used "analog" speedos. i know this becase i have blown every fuse in my car at least once, and i've blown the cluster fuse about 100 times, so everything stopped working except the speedo.
if you live in a cold climate, the line can frost and sieze, depending on the condition of the line.
the pickup can become unaligned, and the coil in the speedo can even snap. i've had all but the latter happen to me.
whatever you do to fix it, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IT RECALIBRATED!!! it can be very annoying.

my 87 had an electronic...
but the 84 I think might have had a cable with the cruise pickup on the back of the speedo, so you might be right, could be a broken cable or stripped pickup gear. I don't know for certain how the 85 did it.
