Default 5000S Wheels

Does anyone know the biggest wheel/tire combo I can put on my 86 5KS Avant? I've recently been getting some crap about my 14" wheels. I was looking at some six-spoke Technomagnesio 16"s. Can I go to a 17" or 18" wheel on this car? I know of some 200s with BIG wheels, but they've done a little reshaping/flaring in their wheel wells to prevent rubbing. Then when I do do this, my little brakes are going to look really funny through that big 'ole wheel. Should I upgrade these, too? I'd like the increased brake performance anyway, but for appearance's sake, the car will need bigger brakes.

Thanks in advance,

Marty H

16" is as big as you can go without throwing off your speedo/odo and risking fender rub.

Default I saw 17's on a 90fwd at the mall at lunch today (same bolt pattern).

You just can't get wide ones, 7" wide ET45 is the most that you can fit. Your best bet is 205's, I am pretty sure that 225's won't fit. Other than that, the rim diameter isn't critical, but the larger you go the harder it is to find a narrow rim.
Todd W

Default A 90 has a different overall wheel diameter than a 5000S.....

...also the bolt pattern doesn't mean sh&% as to what size wheel you can put on!!

The only thing that determines what size wheel you can put on is if there is a tire made with a small enough aspect ratio to give you the correct overall diameter!! A 5000S has a small enough overall diameter as to not allow an approriate tire to be made to allow a 17" rim.

As I said in my last post you could go with a larger wheel but the overall diameter will change and will cause a negative change in performance and speedo/odo will be off, as well as possibly needing body modifications too.

Default Huh!?!??!?!?!?!

The 5000 has the same wheel diameter as the A4/S4/A6 2.8/etc. I thought the 90 was the same, it certainly isn't larger than the 5K.

The problem is the width and the offset, I mentioned the 17's on the 90 because they looked right and should fit on the 5K.

Btw, yes I have done sheetmetal mods to fit wheels on my 5K. The numbers I mentioned before are the limits where you will not need to flare the fenders.
Todd W

Default No actually a 5000 is not the same diameter as a A4/A6(but you were right)....

..I did run the numbers and it turns out that I was mistaken in my last post. You are correct(I was wrong) that a 5000 has the same diameter tire as an '88-'92 90. A 5000/'88-'92 90 has a diameter of ~ 24.2". While a A4/'93+ 90 has a diameter of ~ 25". I should have ran the numbers from the get go!!!

So to correct myself and agree with Todd....a 5000S would also take 17" rims w/o any problems.

Default So what you're saying is...

Stock is 185/70R14

I can go... 195/60R15
205/50R16

up to: 205/40R17 or 215/40R17

???

Thanks, Marty

Default You can put big rims on a 90 no problem due to flared fenders...

But a 5K has no flared fenders, and in the rear you will run into problems if you go wider than 205 or taller than 16" rim. A friend here in FL (Dave) rolled his fenders on his 5K to get some clearance in the rear for bigger rims....he was not successful at all. I know TONS of people on the Coupe Quattro 20v list that have 225/45 17s on the car with no problems. The 5Ks are very limited when it comes to big rims. Remember, back in the mid 80s, NOBODY put 17 rims on their cars!

The '91 200TQ 20vs had flared fenders...so you could go bigger on them.
Christian J. Long
