'87 5KTQ problems
1. Idles fine while cold, but when warm idle speed goes low and erratic (200-600rpm).
2. I seem to be getting a lot of spool down noise, nothing unusual while accelerating but when I come off throttle quickly it gets loud.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.

1. Air leaks - how old are the hoses to/from intercooler? Pull the Michelin Man hose and inspect for minute leaks.
2. How old are your plugs/wires? When wires get age on them, the wires break down as they heat up.
Re: spool down noise, pull the lower intercooler hose and check for radial and/or axial play on the turbo impeller shaft. Excessive play may mean the turbo needs to be rebuilt.

I actually solved the random idle problem by just pulling off the idle stabilizer valve and cleaning it. It idles beautifully at a stable 800 rpm again. All other ignition and vacuum components in good shape.
I'll check the play in the turbo this weekend when I have some extra time.
