Default Audi Concerns

Late this Spring, I will be taking delivery of a Audi TT. It comes with all options, as it is the Neiman Marcus Limited Edition. However, I do have a few concerns and your comments are appreciated.
1. I have heard that although Audi ofers a lot of car for the money, the reliability is rather poor. That is, little things tend to go wrong frequently.
2. The durability is not up to the standard of other luxury cars. The car won't hold up in future years as some of its competitors.
3. The premium Bose stereo bites.
4. The TT is not a true sports car. Rather, it is a cool looking car with sporty handling which lacks that razor's edge necessary to be a sports car.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

Default Re: Audi Concerns

Since the TT is not hear yet, it's kind of hard to comment on the bose system in that car, or the handling, but...
1. I don't agree with this. Yes, there may be some switchgear failures and silly things like that later in life, but generally, in my experience anyway, Audi builds very reliable cars.
2. I find that if there are going to be any problems, they will show up right away. Down the road is where Audi cars really show their worth. They are solidly built, and the main mechanicals are very durable.
3. Bose system in A4 is actually quite good (except for reception), unless you are comparing it to a several thousand dollar aftermarket system. I think a majority of people find it more than acceptable. Will probably sound completely different in the TT. Better maybe?
4. I'd have to drive it, but most reports I've seen say it's a good handler, with the exception of the British press. History tells me that the British press tends to be biased against Audi's for some reason. Guess they just do whatever they can to try and sell their cars.
Additional info: Your NM TT is going to be a very cool car. Have fun! :-)
Charles
Lets see...
1.every manufacturer has little things that go wrong...
2.I'm considering a '90 CQ or '93 S4 as my next car...
3.The stereo doesn't make the car. If thats the case, my '93 Beretta GTZ would be sweet...
4.ANYTHING WITH TURBO AND QUATTRO IS A SPORTS CAR!!!
just my $.02
Jason C

Default Audi longterm

Although I have never had personal experience to this extent I can give you a few examples. My Audi tehc who is also a personal friend has an '82?? 4000 with 400,000 miles on it and not one major problem yet. Another has an 86 4000 with 200,000 miles and no known problems and still kicksbutt at the local autocrosses and takes the abuse with no problem. They are many other stories like this. I could go on and on all day with about every other model offered. They shine in the end, there may be some few annoyances on the beginning, although I have not encountered them.
Chris

I don't know about the new models, but I don't see Audi quality being any worse than BMW, and certainly better than American cars.
Audis in the past have been very durable, my 5KTQ has 200K and is constantly prefered over newer cars by passengers. I have ridden in ones with 400K that were rougher, but still very dependable daily drivers.
The Bose system is good for a factory system, but aftermarket can easily be better.
Depends what you call a sports car. It isn't a 911. Audis handle very well, but they use much more suspension travel and body movement to do it than a Porsche. On the other hand, you can drive them for 12 hours and not be overly stiff or sore.
I haven't seen a TT, but the reviews seem in line with other Audi models. You can go aftermarket for the "razor's edge" if you want. HTH
Todd W

Default Audi can be worded as "trouble" (not ALL!)

I hear often people saying that their Audi has zillion of troublefree miles.
My experience and other peoples I met is that they can be a LOT of trouble (read costly) after the end of warranty. The car can be durable, but often the cost to keep them on road make it a non-viable alternative.
I have spent 7000$ to keep my car on-road from 70000 miles to 110000 miles.

Default Yes, they can get nickel&dimey
Even so, I have not spent more than what leasing a $20K car would run. I do the little repairs myself, and take the bigger stuff to a mechanic. Most importantly, I like my car better than a new $20-25K car, and so do most of the people that ride in it. If you don't know about cars, it is an invitation to spend a lot of money though (pre-91)
Todd W

Pre-90's Audi cars have been described as a "masochist's dream" by one car guide. However the 92 Audi 100 was rated 3rd in 5 year reliability by JD Powers.
DwayneC
94 S4
