clutch problems
My car is making a grinding/whirring sound in third. I anticipate it has to the clutch. My question is roughly how long can I drive the car before the clutch is likely to go?

Are you sure it's the clutch? Clutch only works during engage or...
disengagement of gears. If noise is there on a straight drive with feet off the clutch, noise is probably in the transmission itself.

You are right it is there all the time (perhaps it just seems worse when I first stick it in third). So, what is the likely rememdy? And how long can I drive it/am I making it worse?

If its a trans bearing or gear noise, you are facing a major trans overhaul. But...
look for the cheap fixes first. Are you sure there is enough trans. oil in the trans?. Remove the plug on the side and you should see oil at the level of the hole. Dry trans makes noise, and dies fast.
If itdoes need trans overhaul, my inclination is to ignore the noise and postpone the overhaul.
