Default Front End Maintenance

I've got an '86 5KS with about 140k miles on it. It's is our daily driver, is in good shape, and I want to get about another 60k miles out of it before 'retiring' it. I am buying new tires shortly, and want to make sure the front end is OK. Should I replace all the rubber bushings just as a matter of good maintenance? This would be cheaper than replacing all ball joints, tie rods, etc. Anything else I should be considering?

Default Re: Front End Maintenance

Mike,
Personally I would only do what needs to be done now...or things that can be replaced together to save time, effort and money. Somethings to consider when doing frontal work:
Struts
strut bearings
balljoints
tie rod ends and assemblies
control arm bushings
subframe bushings...etc.
Give your c.v. joints and boots, engine mounts and tranny mounts a good look over too...just for good measure.(while your in the "area" )

Most of these repairs are not too expensive, mostly time consuming...redoing some or all will result in a smoother running and driving experience...

By the way, whats wrong with the way she runs now?

Default I would be reluctant to engage ina replacement program without clearer symptoms.....

of front end. Is the steering too loose?
if you raise the car and wobble the wheel, there should be only an imperceptible looseness of the wheeel. Try wonbbling it top-bottom and side to side.
also, raise front end with jack stands and try to wobble everything connected to the steering mechanism/suspension. If nothing is loose, dont do too much repair.

Default Agree w. Stephen. It needs to be done...

Just do it all up at once. Audi will kill you by increments. The parts are cheap and relatively easy to install, it'll drive as new once he's done.
