Default Fuel Injectors

Hi everyone,

I need to replace or clean the fuel injectors in my 1990 Audi 100. It is stalling ocasionally when I come to a stop. Does anyone have any hints of tips? $300 seems like a lot of money for a set of five. Is there a way to clean them?

Is the replacement as easy as changing a spark plug? Or are there some tricks involved?

Thanks,
Will Harper

There is a way to clean them, but the best way to do it is a specail tester/cleaner that, of course, Bosch doesn't make anymore. But you can take them all out and spray them out with carb cleaner, but be warned: Even if you track down a tester/cleaner, there's no way a CIS injector will get completely clean, it's best to just replace them. Check out www.autohausaz.com for them, they've got great prices on OEM stuff. It's kind of slow(they operate via email) and you have to register with them, but they usually respond within 12 hours, and it's all completely free. And no, I don't work for them. :P

Thanks for the advise.

I think I'll replace them and save the old ones for possible later cleaning and re-instalation.

Are there any tricks to replaceing them? Special tools?

Default try additives

I am in the midst of the same problem. I either picked up some bad gas a while back or I let the tank run too low. It gets a little better each time I do a treatment (I've done three) and the last I upped the concentration (added to 1/4 tank of gas). Almost back to normal rocket speed and smooth idle. I just ordered a case of 12 bottles - Techron seems to be the additive of choice - available lotsa places ($8 at auto part stores - I ordered the case from blauf at $3 a bottle. Autobahn brand) My injectors are over $100 a piece x 5. Yikes.

I've tried that quite a bit. Some increase in performance while the additive is in the fuel but when I get a new tank then it is back to the same old stalling and poor gas mileage.

Default yeah, that sucks

Might be that not all are bad. The procedure for checking them as in the manual doesn't seem to horrible. I guess mine as been kinda marginal as my mileage has not been off hardly at all. Sure notice the missing power, though. If you are a diy'er, maybe you could purchase one injector so you could see wha t the spray pattern, quantity is one a good one.

Default Carbon Cleaning

You could get a professional carbon cleaning. This circulates some very nasty stuff around the fuel line and injectors. I think it costs around $100, but it will answer once and for all, whether your injectors are clogged or there are other problems.

Good luck,

Dave

Default That sounds like....

..a dirty/bad Idle Stabilization Valve(ISV). Have you tried cleaning that yet!!! I'm not so sure that it's your injectors that need the cleaning!! (Just thinking out loud)

There is a special tool for CIS injectors, but it's unnecessary. Just clamp a pair of vise grips on the body of the injector(DO NOT clamp them on to the nut on the injector line! They WILL break!), and use a screwdriver to leverage it out, it should just pop right out. And, of course, remember to use new injector seals. But as far as special tricks go, they pop out, and the new ones pop in. Simple as a Chevy.
