Default hard starting...

87 5000s won't start now unless I squirt fuel into the air duct. It seems to eat up the fuel, then it will (sometimes stall) run on a couple of cyl's for upto 5min. If you try to accelerate, it will bog right out to a stall. Once the engine has warmed up, it runs great. I've replaced: Distributor cap/rotor, plug wires, plugs (gapped to .30), fuel pump, f. filter, air filter, fixed 2 vacuums, checked fuel system for leaks, from the fp, fuel sender unit, right to the engine. notta.
Could this be an electronic/sensor problem, or something like injectors?

Default Did you check the cold start valve...

it is the big box down near the bottom of the block on the drivers side with a couple of braided steel hoses running to it. I had to take mine apart and clean it.

Default Electronic as on the ignition side, I think you are ok ...

but this sounds like the ecu is keeping the mixture way to lean during cold startup conditions, when the ecu should be providing a richer mixture.
could be a sensor problem, the O2 sensor may be faulty, check when cold vs when hot, you may also have a faulty temp sensor to the ecu and or to the idle control.

Default Check fuse

I had the exact same problem a couple of months back. The german guys at the import workshop couldn't figure out what the problem was. I changed the plugs, cables, rotor, and distributor and it still didn't start in the morning.

Check your fuel injector control fuse in the fuse box. Mine was blown and after I replaced it, voila....it started nice and healthy

Default Problem solving...

The parts replaced were done out of necessity anyway. I priced an o2 sensor-Ouch! I think I'm going to start with the cold start v. , temp sensor, etc.
Also, I was test driving it the other day, (after working on the auto trans.) and the oil warning lt. came on. Guess what? Blew the intake line for the engine oil cooler. ($ of synthetic oil, now dust control on the road!) So I tried to fix the line with some JB WELD, but the cooler itself took a leak. Those lines are double the price of the cooler, EACH! I bought just the cooler, and used hydraulic lines from a loader off on of my tractors instead-they're heat-resistant, durable and flexible, and NOT $219 ea.!
