heated mirrors
I understand this is a common problem for this model and year. I've read the heater element fails, and people have indicated they've had Audi "replace" the mirrors. I've also read that once repaired, there is a "fix" which coordinates power to the heat element only when needed (maybe along with rear defroster). I'll look into that later, but in the meantime I need to get these fixed!
My question is this: What actually must be replaced? The entire mirror, or is it possible to replace the heater element? If so, is there a source other than an Audi dealer?
Insights and experiences much appreciated! BTW...I'm out-of warranty!
2. Measure resistance on heater element on back of mirror.
3. Should read approximatly 6.2k ohms
Now that works out to be 23 millwatts of power with a 12 volt feed so that mirror heater is going to work really slow.
Anyway if it isn't the mirror the defrost switch is the next thing to look at. I don't mean the defrost switch on climate control panel but the big "stand alone" one that activates your rear window defroster.
My manual only goes up to 97 too, don't know if the Bentley is out for your model year yet.
One difference may be due to model year, as I understand that for 1998s, mirrors are switched on with ignition power (not linked to defrost switch). Anyway, your advice is helpful and appreciated. i think it is the mirrors, so measuring resistance should provide the answer.
