HELP!!

This morning while idling my car to clean off the snow/ice that formed overnight the car started and ran fine for about 5 minutes when it just shut off. I got in the car and then started it again, it started and ran fine for another 2 minutes and then shut off. I then tried to start it again and it started, revved smoothly all the way up to 4.5K RPM and back down to 1K again. I then took my foot off the gas and the revs smoothly dropped to 0. The car started fine again and reved fine again and then shut off once I stopped applying gas. When it shuts off there's no hint of roughness whatsoever. I looked at the Gas level and it is lower than I've ever let it get before so maybe it's just low on fuel so the pressure when it's idling is not enough to sustain sufficicient fuel to maintain engine speed. Maybe I'm just reaching.
My brother's on his way over now to take me to get some gas to throw in there and hopefully that's the extent of it. But just in case can anyone provide some ideas of where to look?

The car is a '95 90 Quattro Sport.

Ok, my brother came over and I started the car up again. It started fine and ran fine but I noticed the revs fluttering a bit this time. I decided to have him follow me to the Gas station with the Can in hand JIC. While driving the Gas needle seeemed to level off inbetween the Red zone so I know that Gas level is not a problem, I think I was getting a false reading because my driveway is slightly sloped. While stopped at the light waiting for it to go green I noticed that the revs were 'fluttering'. By fluttering I mean bouncing up and down within maybe 50-100 rpms between high and low. My brother thinks it's the ISV. Where is the ISV on the 12v engine and how do you get to it? I'd like to take it out tonight and give it a good cleaning.
